I think we should hold some type of poll for where the next Oppo will be. Sounds like we have a few options, between Drivetribe , Driving Lane , Mastadon , and OppositeLock.com .

I’m sure more will enter the fray, and I know there’s a Discord too.

It’d be a real shame if we all just split up evenly between all of those sites. Th e size and variety is what makes this site great.

Driving Lane seems the most promising but also the least proven. Mastadon seems like Discord but less capable and I’m not a fan. Drivetribe is eh.

Well I’m not sure how to get access to the Driving Lane thing. It seems the most like Kinja Oppo but it also doesn’t appear to really be open right now. Supposedly people have been working on something more like a true replacement but I haven’t heard many specifics.

A bunch of the mod-types are mulling over options at the moment. Driving Lane looks like it’s a WordPress, no? I think OppositeLock.com has been tinkering with that as well. Either way, I think we should probably go with OppositeLock.com as the closest URL to this one when all is said and done. DriveTribe also looks promising and has a lot of familiar faces already there, but it sounds like that’s a non-starter for a lot of folks for some reason .

The chat-style sites are good for keeping up, but don’t seem like a permanent home. Folks share life updates, hop on when Oppo’s not busy, and still get to interact with folks who pop on later. They’re garbage for longer posts and photos, but a nice supplement to whatever blog/forum we end up on.

At the moment, some sort of phpBB or vBulletin forum, or maybe DriveTribe are strong candidates. Some are against DriveTribe in the sense we’r e just chaining our self to yet another proprietary site tech (like Kinja) that way, even though it’s relatively similar to Kinja in some ways.

The nice thing about a forum is that one of US could run it FOR US and it’d likely be open-source, so easy to maintain and tinker with.

I loved forums dearly back in the day, but they lack the visual oomph of a blog-style format. I can’t tell y’all how many times I clicked on something because the photo up top was cool. I’m also frankly not sure how long those bulletin board systems are going to be around at this point. Functional, yes. Ancient, also yes.

I like the DriveTribe folks (awesome bunch to freelance for), but yeah, I get the folks who don’t want to be tied to another platform. A few folks just don’t like the layout or post order , either.

We’ll see. A bunch of the mod s are getting together tomorrow to look at the options, so yee haw.

It’s a work in progress but I slapped this together tonight. Seems like a better looking forum option than the old standby PHPBB forums. I agree we’re missing something without a leading image for sure, that’s definitely a problem.

Any idea what went wrong with the Gotham Grabber thing? We’re trying to run the copy that worked last year on a few newer posts, and no dice.

No, sadly. It appears to work for some people but not others and is likely an issue with Nodejs. I ended up using the Just Jeepin’ method, but still plan on trying GothamGrabber before they burn the place down. Also hopeful someone will come up with a method to save comments. extractKinja allegedly does that, so I’ll give it a go soon.
